Influenza can be prevented by vaccination.

Influenza is caused by infection with the influenza virus, which tends to spread periodically during the rainy and winter seasons. This virus has the potential to mutate into new, more severe strains.

💉🩺How is influenza transmitted?

It spreads through airborne droplets by contact with the secretions (nasal mucus, saliva, or phlegm) of an infected person. This can happen through coughing or sneezing on others, or by touching surfaces contaminated with the influenza virus and then touching the nose or mouth.

📌How can influenza be prevented?

Avoid contact with infected individuals, wash hands frequently, wear a mask when sick, and avoid crowded places. Getting vaccinated, especially for high-risk groups, helps prevent severe complications.

👨‍👨‍👧‍👦Who should receive the influenza vaccine?

1. Pregnant women who are 4 months or more into their pregnancy.

2. Children aged 6 months to 2 years.

3. Individuals with chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, renal failure, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and diabetes.

4. People aged 65 years and older.

5. Individuals with cognitive disabilities who cannot care for themselves.

6. Individuals with thalassemia and those with immune deficiencies (including symptomatic HIV patients).

7. Individuals with obesity (weight >100 kilograms or BMI >35 kilograms per square meter).

8. Healthcare and public health personnel at risk of exposure to influenza.

Why do we need to get the influenza vaccine every year?

  • It helps our body to build immunity against the virus,
  • It reduces the risk of getting influenza,
  • It decreases the severity of the illness,
  • It reduces the chance of hospitalization.
