Total Knee Replacement

A: It is a procedure in which the damaged joint surface is removed and replaced with a smooth artificial joint surface to improve movement, reduce pain, and enhance daily function.

A: The operation itself takes approximately 1–2 hours. Including preparation and recovery, patients typically stay in the hospital for about 3–5 days.

A: Surgery is considered when knee pain significantly affects daily life and does not improve with other treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections

A: It depends on the extent of damage.
If only one part of the knee is affected, partial replacement may be sufficient.
If damage is extensive, full knee replacement is usually needed.

A: About 4–6 hours after surgery, patients can start moving their knee while lying in bed.
On the first day, they can begin sitting up and walking with assistance.
Most patients can walk with a walker within a month. A cane is often recommended for added stability.

A: On average, 15–20 years or longer with proper care and avoidance of excessive strain.
