What is Nerve Compression (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)?
Nerve compression occurs when the ligament (transverse carpal ligament) at the wrist thickens and compresses the nerve that provides sensation to the fingers.
This pressure interferes with normal nerve signals, causing symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, electric shock–like sensations, or a burning feeling.
Common Symptoms
- Sharp, electric shock–like or burning pain in the palm radiating to the fingers
- Pain may travel along the nerve pathway up to the arm or shoulder
- Symptoms often worsen with hand use and at night
- If left untreated, prolonged compression may lead to permanent nerve damage
Who Is at Risk?
- People who use their hands intensively, such as homemakers, cooks, factory workers, and delivery riders
- Patients with diabetes or inflammatory conditions
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the severity and location of the condition and may include:
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medications
- Physical therapy
- Local steroid injections
- Surgical release (in more severe cases)
Treatment is provided by orthopedic specialists. The appropriate option depends on the severity of the condition.
Early and accurate diagnosis helps reduce complications and improves the chances of recovery.
When Should You See a Doctor?
- Persistent pain or numbness lasting more than 1–2 weeks
- Symptoms that progressively worsen and interfere with daily activities
A doctor can determine the underlying cause and develop a personalized treatment plan for you.
