Currently, there are three main methods for cervical cancer screening:

1. Pap Smear

This is a screening method in which a gynecologist uses a spatula-like instrument to collect cells from the cervix. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for examination to detect any abnormal or precancerous cells. This traditional method has been used for a long time.

2. ThinPrep Test

An improved version of the Pap smear, ThinPrep provides more accurate and detailed results. In this method, the gynecologist uses a small brush to collect cervical cells, then detaches the brush head into a preservative solution to maintain the sample. The sample is processed by an automated machine to prepare a clean cell slide by removing mucus, blood cells, or overlapping cell clusters — thereby increasing the chance of detecting abnormalities more effectively.

3. ThinPrep HPV Test

A more advanced screening method that analyzes at the DNA level. The ThinPrep HPV test detects both cervical cancer cells and the DNA of high-risk HPV strains associated with cervical cancer. It offers greater accuracy than Pap smear alone and can identify hidden risks of developing cervical lesions or cancer.

Who should undergo cervical cancer screening?

• Women aged 25 years and above, or those who have been sexually active

• Those with abnormal vaginal discharge (e.g., foul-smelling or blood-stained discharge)

• Those with vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse

• Those with unexplained vaginal bleeding

How to prepare for your cervical cancer screening:

• Schedule the test about one week after your menstrual period ends

• Avoid sexual intercourse for about 3 days before the test

• Avoid vaginal douching or inserting medication for at least 48 hours before the test

• If inflammation or abnormal cervical cells are found, follow up regularly with your doctor

• Regular cervical cancer screening is strongly recommended
