This is a live attenuated vaccine that helps stimulate the body’s immune system to protect against the initial infection of the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Children:
Should receive it as part of the routine immunization schedule.
Adolescents and Adults (aged 13 years and older):
Especially those who have never had chickenpox or have never been vaccinated should receive 2 doses.
Vaccination Schedule
The chickenpox vaccine can be administered starting from 1 year of age:
- Ages 1–12 years: 2 doses, at least 3 months apart
- Ages 13 years and older: 2 doses, at least 1 month apart
High-Risk Groups Recommended for Vaccination
- Healthcare workers
- Individuals planning pregnancy (must be vaccinated at least 1 month prior to conception)
- Teachers
- Childcare workers
- Individuals traveling abroad
Effectiveness
After completing 2 doses:
- Up to 94% effective in preventing chickenpox of all severity levels
- Up to 98% effective in preventing severe cases
