HPV Vaccine: Protect Against Cervical Cancer

What diseases does the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine help prevent?

In addition to protecting women against cervical cancer, the HPV vaccine also helps prevent other cancers such as:

• Vaginal and vulvar cancers
• Anal cancer
• Oral and oropharyngeal (throat) cancers

For men, the vaccine helps prevent:

• Penile cancer
• Anal cancer
• Oral and oropharyngeal cancers

Recommended Age for Vaccination

• Ages 9–14 years: 2 doses are recommended, with the second dose given 6 months after the first.
• Ages 15 years and older or individuals with weakened immune systems: 3 doses are recommended, with the second dose given 1–2 months after the first.

Possible Side Effects After HPV Vaccination

HPV vaccines are generally very safe, with mild and temporary side effects, which may include:

• Pain, swelling, redness, or itching at the injection site
• Mild fever, which usually resolves on its own

Serious side effects are extremely rare.
How to manage mild side effects:

• Apply a cold compress to relieve pain or swelling at the injection site.
• Take an appropriate dose of fever-reducing medication if fever occurs.
  If symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a doctor immediately and provide a detailed description of your symptoms.
